An EV For Less Than a Kia Picanto? BYD Seagull 2025 Preview Drive

Chasing Cars road test editor John Law heads to China to test drive the BYD Seagull, the electric compact city car that could slip in at a price-busting $25K if it’s added to the Australian BYD line-up in future.

Powered by a modest 55kW and 135Nm motor, the unusually named Seagull is claimed to get around 325 kilometres of range from its sub-40kWh battery pack. It measures just 3.8 metres in length and at leisurely 14 seconds for 0-100km/h, it’s hardly a rocketship…

The pint-sized EV is likely to be rebadged as the Surf if and when it comes to Australia, and the (slightly larger four-metre-long) Dolphin Surf model can output as much as 115kW in European market spec.

Is it good? Is it fun? Does it deserve a place in the Australian market? Watch on to find out…
