Battle of Bunker Hill: A Shocking Scene of Slaughter
A British lieutenant is visibly shaken by what he sees on the battlefield. He can’t bring himself to describe the horror any longer. The scene is grim: blood staining the ground, dead and dying soldiers everywhere, with some men stabbed and others crushed by frenzy and chaos.
The British do push up to the heights, but they’re not in a position to capitalise on their success.
In the Battle of Bunker Hill, the British suffer roughly 200 dead and more than 800 wounded. Patriot losses are about 450. Among the Patriots, Joseph Warren stands out—a charismatic leader who had been president of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. He had chosen to fight as a private, and he falls in the redoubt during the final assault, becoming a martyr for the cause.
