BYD Shark 6 vs GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV: Off-Road, Dyno, And Payload Tested!

A pair of off-road capable, plug-in hybrid dual-cabs from China? The world really has changed. The BYD Shark 6 had the PHEV ute market all to itself for a while, but now rivals are arriving hot on its heels. The Ford Ranger is coming soon, but first the newest challenger comes in the form of the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV.

With a mechanical 4x4 system including locking centre and rear differentials — with an optional front locker as fitted to our Ultimate trim — the Cannon Alpha should have the edge in the rough stuff.

But what about the whole package? 4x4 specialist Evan Spence and road test editor John Law get under the skin of these two new takes on the ute with off-road, payload and dyno challenges to find out if the Shark 6 has met its match.
