I got more electric range in the New BMW M5 than BMW promised
Join us as we take the all-new 2025 BMW M5 (G90) on a real-world electric range test to see if this 717-horsepower plug-in hybrid super sedan can exceed its official EPA-rated 25-mile electric-only range.
Powered by a 577 hp twin-turbo 4.4L V8 engine and a 194 hp electric motor, the M5 boasts a combined output of 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. Its underfloor-mounted lithium-ion battery offers 18.6 kWh globally, though U.S. models have a usable capacity of 14.8 kWh due to regulatory constraints.
In our test, conducted under typical spring conditions in Chicago (55°F–60°F), we drove a mix of city streets and highways, maintaining natural driving habits with speeds capped around 65 mph. The result? An impressive nearly 40 miles of pure electric driving—surpassing the EPA estimate by 15 miles.
