Is a $43K electric SUV too good to be true? (Chery Omoda E5 2024 Review)

Some 18 months after the debut of its price-lead Omoda 5 midsize SUV, Chery has lobbed a fully electric version - its first EV offering in Australia - in the form of the Omoda E5.

With its slicker restyling and bespoke electric architecture, the Omoda E5 arrives in two variants: the entry BX at $42,990 and the higher-grade EX $45,990, both before on-roads.

Powered by a single front-mounted electric motor good for 150kW and 340Nm, the Omoda E5 fits a 61.1kWh battery with modest 80kW peak DC charging, if with a maximum range claim of 430 kilometres.

Chasing Cars contributor Nathan Ponchard takes the newcomer for a spin, to see if the new electric version has overcome some of the tech and drivability woes of its petrol sibling. And to see if Chery has hit the mark with its new price-savvy electric SUV.
