James Madison was the 4th president of the United States
But he also could have been the 4th president to die on the 4th!

John Adams, the second American president, and Thomas Jefferson, the third American president, died on the same day- July 4th, 1826. Which is pretty cool not only because that’s the day Americans celebrate as the BIRTHDAY of the United States but it was specifically the 50th birthday of the country.

Less people know that James Monroe, the FIFTH American president, ALSO died on July 4. July 4, 1831…exactly five years after Adams and Jefferson died. And ya know what? Doctors thought it’d be cool if Madison died on the Fourth of July, too. I’m not joking. In June 1836, when Madison was sick and old, his doctors offered to give him stimulants to keep him alive until the 60th birthday of the country, but Madison turned them down.

Instead, Madison broke tradition and died on June 28th.
