McMurtry Spéirling Pure: Full Top Gear Test Track Review!
Downforce increases with speed, doesn’t it? Well, yes, unless you have a ‘fan car’, which sucks itself to the ground too.
To date, it’s mainly been cars coming from Gordon Murray that have had fans: first his Brabham BT46B Formula 1 car; then his seminal McLaren F1 (did you know it had twin fans?); and most recently the T.50.
But now there’s a new car that uses fans to devastating effect: the McMurtry Spéirling.
It weighs 1000kg, produces 1000 electric horsepower, and the fans can spin at up to 23,000rpm to generate 2000kg of downforce from 0mph.
You may know it from its record-breaking run at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it smashed a McLaren Formula 1 car’s time that had stood since 1999. Now though, it’s been to the Top Gear Test Track, to be put through its paces by Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing Ollie Marriage…
