From its beginning New York City has been a city of immigrants. Immigrants from all over Europe moved to New York City and helped to build it and develop its culture. Major waves of immigration from Ireland, Italy, Germany, and Eastern Europe provided the labour and people to build New York City's skyline, infrastructure and contribute to its sense of identity. From iconic sites like the Empire State, Rockefeller Plaza, Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park which were all built by immigrants, to New York City's neighbourhoods like Manhattan, Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens which each have a unique culture and identity shaped by people who have moved to New York over the centuries, the history of this city is layered and continues to be added to today by new groups of people who come here looking for opportunities. Much like those immigrants of the past, people who move to New York today continue to write its history and develop its culture. New York is a melting pot of cultures, people and food, and one of the most important cities in the world!
