Our 4 Day Journey to Summit Mt Kenya

Mt Kenya is the second tallest mountain on the African continent and the the tallest one in Kenya at 5,199m or 17,057ft above sea level. Even though Mount Kenya is not as tall as Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, it is known to but a much more challenging climb.

Our climb started at the Narumoru Gate where we met with our amazing team from Go To Mt Kenya. After a quick but delicious lunch, it was time to start our journey to the top of the mountain which is going to take 2 and a half days up and 1 and a half day down. After about 9km, we arrived at Met station for our first night on the mountain. I have to say, we were surprised by how nice the cottages were. They had power, beds with small mattresses and even flushing toilets. We slept just fine!

Day two was a bit more challenging as gained a lot of elevation. 11km later, we arrived at our camp for the night which once again had beds and power in addition to a stunning view of the peak of Mt Kenya.

The summit day started extremely early with a 2am wake up and a 2:30am hiking start. It was dark, cold and windy but we kept putting one feet in from of the other slowly but surely and we were able to make it to the top of Point Lenana known as the hiker's peak at 4,985m above sea level just in time for sun rise. It was quite emotional as we knew this was the conclusion of 4 years living in Kenya but also the beginning of a new adventure.

Finally, after just a few minutes at the top of Mt Kenya, it was time to start making our way down for breakfast. We were so hungry at that point that we ate it all in just a few minutes. Lots of calories that were about to be used in our 6 hours journey down to Old Moses Camp where we spent our last night inside the Mt Kenya National Park.

Overall an amazing experience which we would highly recommend to any nature lover and if you want a great team to do it with, check out Go To Mt Kenya. Our package included a porter team, head guide, mountain cottage fees, national park fees and three meals a day meaning that you simply need to show up with your hiking kit.
