Vovchansk, a city in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region where over 80% of buildings have been destroyed, has become the site of a dangerous underground war. In March 2025, Ukraine’s 34th Motorized Infantry Battalion—known as the Wolfhounds—responded with a new mine-based tactic that is changing the fight.

In footage released in September 2025 by Euromaidan Press, Ukrainian soldiers are seen throwing activated anti-tank mines into Russian tunnel openings, triggering devastating explosions. The tactic directly counters Russia’s reliance on underground operations and threatens to collapse their fortifications. With Vovchansk serving as a potential stepping stone toward Kupiansk, Ukraine’s strategy aims to block Russia’s advance and preserve control over Kharkiv, a region vital both strategically and symbolically.
