Sedans and Minivans are making a comeback. The Korean automakers #hyundai and #kia are showing a big jump in sales for these two segments.

Hyundai Motor America reported May total sales of 84,521 units, an 8% increase compared with May 2024. Total sales records in May were set for Venue (+74%), Elantra N (+141%), Santa Fe (+0.3%), IONIQ 6 (+9%), Tucson (+15%) and Palisade (+10%). May total sales of hybrid vehicles jumped 5%. This was the best May ever for hybrid and total electrified sales.

“Retail sales held steady this month, and that consistency reflects the strength of our lineup and the trust customers continue to place in the Hyundai brand,” said Randy Parker, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor North America. “The delivery of our first IONIQ 9 marks a powerful step forward in Hyundai’s EV journey at our Georgia Metaplant. We’re not just meeting demand; we’re shaping the future of electrification in the U.S.”

Marking a significant milestone in its U.S. journey, in May the Hyundai brand surpassed 17 million vehicles sold since entering the U.S. market in 1986, a powerful reflection of nearly four decades of growth, resilience, and connection with American drivers. In Hyundai’s diverse lineup, six models, Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Santa Fe, Accent, and Excel, have each sold over one million units, with the Elantra standing as the brand’s all-time best-seller. This milestone underscores Hyundai’s position as a major force in the U.S. auto industry and sets the stage for continued success in the years ahead.

Kia America delivered 79,007 total units in May – up 5-percent over the same period last year – and extended the fast-growing brand’s streak of consecutive months of year-over-year sales growth to eight. Retail sales at Kia dealerships increased by 8-percent over May 2024 and are up 15-percent year-to-date, reinforcing the company’s continuous growth trajectory in the marketplace.

The Carnival MPV, which introduced a new hybrid model last year, saw a significant sales increase of 68-percent year-over-year. Additionally, popular SUV models such as Telluride (+12-percent) and Sportage (+10-percent), along with the sporty K4 sedan (+4-percent), all achieved their highest-ever May sales.

“As the second half of the year approaches, Kia's market competitiveness continues to strengthen with eight consecutive months of sales growth. Kia’s diverse powertrain lineup, including ICE, hybrids, and EVs, coupled with the strong and sustained customer interest in the brand’s Telluride, Sportage, Carnival MPV, and K4 models have been some of the key drivers of the company’s continued sales growth,” said Eric Watson, vice president, sales operations, Kia America. “And we anticipate this growth trajectory will continue with the 2026 EV9 Nightfall Edition and EV9 GT-Line with two-tone roof now available in showrooms nationwide. With new design elements – including a new two-tone roof, as well as enhancements in driving range and performance – the upgraded EV9 Nightfall Edition and the EV9 GT-Line with two-tone roof are set to better meet the expectations of customers looking for a three-row, all-electric SUV.”
