TRANSNISTRIA Needs to Prepare for Russian INVASION

Russia may be preparing to station 10,000 troops in Transnistria, Moldova’s breakaway region, according to Prime Minister Dorin Recean in a June 5 interview with The Financial Times. That move, if realized, could reshape the security balance in Eastern Europe, especially near NATO ally Romania. Russian forces have maintained a presence in Transnistria since the early 1990s, but recent intelligence suggests an unprecedented escalation.

Recean’s concerns are reinforced by Russia’s alleged hybrid warfare campaign, including a failed attempt to derail Moldova’s EU referendum in 2024, which passed by just 0.7%. The region remains critical due to its Soviet-era military stockpiles, heavy Russian influence, and Moldova’s reliance on its energy infrastructure. With the EU offering €200 million in defense aid and Moldova still waiting on full membership, the standoff in Transnistria may become a defining test of Europe’s eastern security architecture.
