Goodwood in the snow? What is Ferdi Porsche’s GP Ice race?

After a three year break (thanks to a global pandemic and warm temperatures), the F.A.T International Ice Race at Zell am Zee is back. But what on earth is it? And why haven't you heard about it before? Organised by 30-year old Ferdi Porsche (yes, that Porsche), the Austrian ice racing event can trace its roots way back to the 50s - with the Porsche family having a strong presence in the area way back then. But enthusiasm waned, until Ferdi brought the event back in 2019, with an eclectic showcase of everything from Porsche factory Dakar cars to 1950s speedsters and everything in-between. And it's not just Porsches here, there's everything from dune buggies to hot hatch rally specials and priceless vintage Ferraris.

So what's it all about? Let Top Gear's Ollie Marriage be your guide.

FIRST LOOK: New Renault 5! £25k Retro EV Hatch

It’s finally here! In simplest terms, the new 5 is Renault’s B-segment electric replacement for the Zoe. But actually, it’s much more than that – it’s the beginning of Renault lighting the retro EV afterburners with e-incarnations of the 4 and Twingo coming down the pipe. The 5 has barely changed from the 2021 concept that stole our hearts with its retro influences – with Renault claiming the production car is 95 per cent faithful to the original.

Three power outputs are available, all single motor and front-wheel drive: 148bhp (181lb ft of torque, 0-62mph in under 8.0secs, top speed 93mph), 118bhp or 94bhp… although the latter probably won’t be offered in the UK. You’ll have the pick of two battery sizes – 52kWh for a range of around 249 miles and 40kWh for a range of circa 186 miles. Max DC charging speed is 100kW, or 30mins from 15 to 80 per cent.

Cost? Whilst we don’t have exact figures yet, Renault has said it’ll start ā€˜from Ā£25k’ but really, how many cars come with an optional baguette holder?

Join TG’s Jack Rix for a proper deep dive into the new 5, and a step back in time to his childhood…

FIRST LOOK: Ferrari F80 – 1200hp, 4WD, LaFerrari Successor!

This – deep breath – is the new Ferrari F80. The successor to LaFerrari. And by extension, a halo Ferrari supercar with a lineage that stretches back from LaFerrari, through Enzo, F50 and F40, to 288 GTO. No pressure, then…

It’s a once-a-decade occurrence, the LaFerrari having been revealed way back in 2013. That car was Ferrari’s first hybrid, with the electrically boosted V12 powertrain pumping 963hp to the rear wheels. Eleven years on, there’s more electrical assistance, more power, more driven wheels, much more aero, but fewer cylinders…

So, how does the new Ferrari F80 move the game on from LaFerrari, and stack up to its predecessors? Over to Top Gear’s Editor-in-Chief, Jack Rix…

FIRST LOOK: Porsche 911 GT3 — What’s New?

Not one but two new Porsche 911 GT3s are upon us, both a regular be-winged car and the more subtle Touring model. And for once, the headline news isn’t the power, the peak revs or the Nürburgring lap time, but how practical it is.

That’s right, because for the first time in the 25-year history of the GT3, it’s being offered with back seats. It’s only for the Touring, but that addition alone will be enough to start The Internet chattering about whether this is ā€˜all the car you’ll ever need’.

However, if kids, or at least taking your kids with you, isn’t your thing, then worry not. The back seats are merely an option, and the non-Touring GT3 can’t be had with them at all. Plus, if you’re the sort of Porsche purest who hates weight, you can double down on that ethos with either a Weissach pack for the GT3 or a Leichtbau (aka Lightweight) pack for the Touring.

As for what else is new (and there are a lot of detailed, GT3 RS-inspired changes) then join Top Gear Magazine’s Associate Editor Tom Ford, for an in-depth walkaround of both new GT3s with Andreas Preuninger, Porsche’s Director of GT Cars…

Why Is This G-Wagen Wearing A Moncler Puffer Jacket?

This madness before you is the Mercedes ā€˜Project Mondo G’, a monstrously large G-Wagen with wheels and a roof inspired by posh puffer jackets.

The astonishing off-roader-come-moon buggy is officially designated as an ā€˜art piece’, made its debut at London Fashion Week 2023, and is the result of a collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and high-end outwear brand Moncler.

Fast forward to today, and it now has a baby brother too, once again a tie-up with Moncler, and once again complete with quilted fabric roof. Plus! The latest Merc/Moncler G is also going to sire an ultra-exclusive run of 20 modern G-Classes, with bespoke paint and interior trimmings.

But why? Well, over to Top Gear Magazine’s Editor-at-Large, Jason Barlow, to explain how the worlds of automotive and fashion meet and meld…

FIRST DRIVE: New BMW M5 – Too Much Weight To Be Great?

There’s no getting away from the fact the new BMW M5 is a bit of a porker. The previous-generation super-saloon weighed 1895kg; this new one is 540kg more…

Blame the plug-in, hybridised V8, which delivers more power (up 140bhp) and torque (up 184lb ft) than the last M5, and a parsimonious 160mpg+ on the WLTP fuel test. And while figures like those probably looked enticing when BMW started development years ago, enthusiasts aren’t exactly lapping up electrified performance cars in 2024…

But, but, but… this is also an all-new BMW M5! It’s the stuff of legend, with a long legacy of always being top dog over and above rivals from Audi and Mercedes. And while there’s yet to be a new AMG version of the E-class, and Audi will soon end production of the RS6 and RS7, the M5 is here, and with a stonkingly powerful V8 too. Downsizing is not in effect!

So, what really matters is what this new M5 is like behind the wheel. Over to Tom Gear Magazine’s Associate Editor, Tom Ford, for the verdict…
