On May 3, 2025, Ukraine used Magura-7 drone boats to shoot down two Russian Su-30 jets over the Black Sea, marking the first confirmed instance of air-to-air missiles being launched from sea-based drones. The strike used U.S.-made AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles and was confirmed by Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Directorate, with footage released just hours later.

Each Su-30, valued at $50 million, was destroyed—one crew survived, the other did not. This attack reshapes the tactical map for both air and naval operations, signaling Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian aerial threats far from shore. With Naval News releasing the first images of the armed Magura-7 on May 4, this strike proves Russia’s dominance in the Black Sea is now deeply compromised.
