Radically improved, but good enough? (MG HS Essence 2025 Review)

MG has given its HS midsize SUV a ground-up refresh for its new generation that launched in Australia in late 2024, replacing the cheap and popular if critically unloved predecessor.

On test here is the flagship of the three-variant HS range, called the Essence, which lobs for $40,990 list or from $44,300 driveaway (though at the time of publication it’s on $40,990 driveaway offer).

The front driver fits a 125kW and 275Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre engine up and down the range, while the top-spec Essence fits a long list of features for its price point.

But is there quality in the HS Essence beyond the features list. And is there depth in the driving experience so lacking in its forebear? Chasing Cars founder Tom Baker takes a deep dive to find out.

The Russian president Vladimir Putin just held his annual live press conference with Russian journalists and the Russian people, known as the Direct Line. Bluntly, it's all more of a giant Z propaganda show where Putin answers selected heavily vetted questions. Among many of these, one question was asked by the Belarusian YouTuber Vlad A4, also known as the Russian MrBeast clone. Putin was asked about Russia banning YouTube and if it's really going to end up happening. Putin's response was that Google is actually at fault for making YouTube not work in Russia. HUGE SHOCKER: Vladimir Putin lied and was proven wrong by Russian authorities themselves right after the press conference ended. All of this, of course, is a pattern of behaviour for Russia's president. Why does Putin always lie and how does he do it? Let's look at it and decode it based on this one example. Thanks for watching, like and sub for more thx xoxo

Škoda Elroq 2025 Production Line

Škoda has officially commenced production of the Elroq, its most affordable all-electric compact SUV, at the Mladá Boleslav plant. The Elroq combines cutting-edge design with the flexibility of the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, which allows it to offer impressive performance and efficiency. With three battery options and system outputs ranging from 125 kW to 210 kW, the Elroq ensures an optimal balance between range and power. Its competitive pricing of approximately €33,000 before subsidies positions it as one of the most cost-effective EVs in the European market, achieving price parity with combustion-engine alternatives. Škoda’s innovative assembly line also integrates production of the Elroq alongside models like the Enyaq and Octavia, maximizing efficiency and adaptability.

Launched as Škoda’s first model embodying the Modern Solid design language, the Elroq has garnered over 20,000 pre-orders since its unveiling. This compact SUV not only offers up to 581 km of range but also features rapid charging capabilities, reaching 80% in under 30 minutes depending on the battery size. The Mladá Boleslav plant, pivotal to Škoda’s strategic expansion, has enhanced its capacity to produce up to 600 Elroq units daily, leveraging synergies in battery production and assembly. The Elroq’s debut cements Škoda’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility while remaining competitive in the burgeoning EV market.
