Suzuki Swift hatch goes hybrid! Sorta. (Suzuki Swift Hybrid 2024 Review)

The new-generation Suzuki Swift has launched in Australia, boasting hybrid credentials for the very first time, taking on the likes of the Toyota Yaris, the Mazda 2 and the MG3 in the affordable city runabout stakes.

It now boasts Hybrid in its namesake, with power coming from a 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine with mild-hybrid assistance from a small integrated starter-generator contributing 2.3kW and 60Nm. Total outputs are a modest 61kW and 112Nm.

Larger and roomier than the outgoing generation Swift, this new fourth-gen has been given a boost in tech and safety to ensure the compact hatch attempts to move with the times.

Available in four variants and three grades, the range kicks off with the base manual - yes, a manual hybrid - at $24,490 driveaway and tops out with our test subject, the GLX priced from $29,490 driveaway. Yes, the added tech and safety does now come at an extra cost.

A worthy nemesis to the newly released hybrid MG3? Contributor Dylan Campbell finds out.

Tesla Model S Crash Test

The passenger compartment of the 2022-2023 Tesla Model S remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of both the driver and passenger. Tesla demonstrated that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. Protection of the driver’s chest was rated as marginal, based on dummy readings of compression. Analysis of the deceleration of the impact trolley during the test, and analysis of the deformable barrier after the test, revealed that the Model S would be a moderately benign impact partner in a frontal collision. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of all critical body areas was good, both for the driver and the rear passenger, and the Model S scored maximum points in this part of the assessment. Likewise, in both the side barrier and the more aggressive side pole impact, protection of all critical body areas was good. Control of excursion (the extent to which a body is thrown to the other side of the vehicle when it is hit from the far side) was found to be adequate. The Model S has a counter-measure to mitigate against occupant to occupant injuries in such impacts. The system performed well in Euro NCAP’s test, with good protection of occupants’ heads. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric analysis of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection. The Model S has an advanced eCall system which alerts the emergency services in the event of a crash and a system which automatically applies the brakes to prevent secondary collisions.
